Oirschotse Heide and Kampina

Near to: Oirschot, Oostelbeers, Middelbeers

The Oirschotse Heide is a rare treasure trove of plant and animal species. This extensive, rolling heathland is particularly special because of its complex pattern of dry plateaus, wind-deposited elevations and channelled and bowl-shaped hollows. And this diversity is paralleled by the variation in flora. Connoisseurs will be able to spot plant species such as sheep's bit, bird's-foot, trailing St. John's Wort and centaury on the verges of the paths. The area is also home to beautiful butterflies and uncommon amphibians in and around the water.

Mysterious purple glow
Oirschotse Heide lies adjacent to the Kampina nature reserve. This wonderful heathland, surrounded by woodland, is well-known for its European blueberry. This fruit is the cause of the mysterious deep-purple glow that covers the landscape during the entire summer. The south-eastern area of Kampina is also part of Beerze's watercourse. In winter, the Beerze valley usually floods, thus creating a true paradise for aquatic and migratory birds, like waders, geese and ducks. The Dutch nature society, Natuurmonumenten, looks after a large part of this reserve and has it grazed by large cattle of the 'Blonde d'Aquitaine' breed.
